Fire-Resistant Paint

Fire-resistant or fire-retardant paint is a specialized coating designed to slow flame spread and insulate structural materials like steel, timber, and concrete from extreme heat. The most common types, called intumescent paints, expand into a thick, protective foam layer when exposed to fire, buying critical time for evacuation.

1.Intumescent Coatings: These paints react to high heat (typically over 200° C) by swelling and forming a dense, carbonaceous char. This layer blocks oxygen and insulates the material underneath

2.Fire Retardant vs. Fire Resistant: Fire retardant paints primarily slow the spread of flames on the surface. True fire-resistant paints (often rated under strict standards like ASTM E-119) can protect critical infrastructure like structural steel for anywhere from 30 minutes up to 3 hours
